A little preparation can make your time at Dale Hollow Lake easier and more enjoyable. Review fishing licenses, boating requirements, weather and a few packing reminders before leaving home.
Fishing Licenses & Regulations
Most anglers age 13 and older need a valid Tennessee fishing license unless they qualify for an exemption. License requirements vary by age, residency and the type of fishing planned, so visitors should review current Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency requirements before arriving. Tennessee licenses can be purchased online through TWRA.
Dale Hollow Lake also has lake-specific fishing regulations in addition to statewide rules. Current regulations include special limits for smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye and other species, along with seasonal restrictions in portions of the reservoir. Because fishing regulations can change, anglers should always confirm current rules before heading out.
Boating Requirements & Safety
Tennessee has boating education requirements based on age and residency. Tennessee residents born after Jan. 1, 1989 who operate certain motorized vessels generally must meet TWRA boating education requirements. Nonresidents born after Jan. 1, 1989 may use a NASBLA-approved boating safety certificate.

Every boat must have a properly sized, Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket available for each person aboard. Children age 12 and younger are required to wear one while on the open deck of a recreational boat except when anchored, moored or aground. Boaters should also monitor weather closely, maintain safe speeds and never operate a vessel while impaired.
