by Tom Allen, Owner of Sunset Marina

At Sunset Marina, we take the safety of our guests very seriously, especially when it comes to weather conditions on Dale Hollow Lake. While this lake is not prone to hurricanes or tropical storms, we are no strangers to sudden, powerful weather events. Thunderstorms, high winds, and even tornadoes can develop quickly, so it’s important for anyone venturing out on the lake to be prepared. Sunset Marina owner Tom Allen offers his expert advice on how to handle and prepare for stormy conditions while on the water.

Understanding the Risks

Dale Hollow Lake is a beautiful and serene place to enjoy outdoor activities, but weather can turn on a dime, particularly in Tennessee’s unpredictable climate. Here are some common storm threats to be aware of:

  • Thunderstorms: Thunderstorms are common, especially during the warmer months. These can bring heavy rain, strong winds, and the potential for lightning.
  • High Winds: Winds can pick up quickly on the water, particularly in the late afternoon, and pose a significant hazard, especially for larger vessels like houseboats and pontoons.
  • Tornadoes: While tornadoes are rare, they can occur anywhere in the U.S., including around Dale Hollow Lake. These storms can be highly destructive and should never be underestimated.

Preparing for a Day on the Water

Before heading out onto Dale Hollow Lake, Tom recommends taking these steps to ensure you’re ready for any storm that may come your way:

1. Check the Weather Forecast

It may seem obvious, but it’s essential to monitor weather conditions before and during your time on the lake. Modern smartphone apps make it easy to get real-time weather updates, but Tom recommends taking a few additional precautions:

  • Check for Alerts: Always check for severe weather warnings or advisories from the National Weather Service. Storms can develop very quickly on the water.
  • Look for Patterns: If you notice darkening skies or rapidly changing wind directions, take it as a sign that you should prepare for a storm.

2. Have a Weather Radio or App Handy

One of the most important tools to have while out on the water is a reliable way to get weather updates, even if you lose your cell phone signal. A portable NOAA Weather Radio can keep you informed of any storm warnings or tornado watches. If you’re relying on a smartphone, make sure to download weather apps that provide weather alerts for your area.

3. Know the Shelters Around the Lake

If a storm does develop, it’s crucial to have an escape plan. On Dale Hollow Lake, your best bet is to make your way toward a marina or dock that offers shelter. Sunset Marina has a safe area where you can dock in case of bad weather, but it’s always a good idea to plan your route before you head out.

4. Safety Equipment Is Key

Always carry basic safety equipment when you’re on the water. At a minimum, you should have:

  • Life Jackets: For every person on board. Even if you’re not planning on swimming, a life jacket could be a lifesaver if you’re caught in rough waters.
  • Flares and Signaling Devices: These can be crucial for signaling for help, especially in stormy conditions when visibility is low.
  • First-Aid Kit: Always have a stocked first-aid kit, as accidents can happen, especially in inclement weather.

5. Review Emergency Procedures

Knowing what to do in case of an emergency can make all the difference. Here are some key things to keep in mind:

  • In Case of Lightning: Seek shelter immediately. If you’re on a boat, get to shore if possible. Avoid staying on the water, as being on a boat can increase your risk of being struck by lightning.
  • Tornado Warnings: If a tornado warning is issued, immediately seek shelter on land. If you are near a dock or marina, dock your boat and head to the nearest building for protection. Tornadoes can be hard to predict and develop rapidly, so don’t wait for visual confirmation.
  • Heavy Winds: High winds can make boating dangerous, particularly for larger vessels. If you find yourself caught in high winds, try to steer your boat toward shelter or the closest shore. Lower your speed and avoid open water where the waves are likely to be the highest.

6. Have a Communication Plan

Make sure someone on land knows your plans for the day, including when you expect to return. Share details such as your boat type, color, and registration number. This can help rescuers locate you quickly if you run into trouble.

In case of an emergency, keep your phone on hand and charged, but remember that coverage may be spotty depending on your location on the lake.

If You Get Caught in a Storm

Despite your best efforts, sometimes weather can turn unexpectedly while you’re already on the water. If you’re caught in a storm, these steps can help:

  • Stay Calm: Panicking will only make things more difficult. Take a moment to assess the situation and figure out your next steps.
  • Head Toward Shelter: Look for the closest marina, dock, or safe harbor. If you cannot make it to shelter in time, ensure everyone on board has their life jackets on and that you are prepared to ride out the storm.
  • Avoid Navigating at Full Speed: In heavy winds, your boat may become harder to control at high speeds. Slow down to reduce the risk of capsizing or losing control.
  • Keep Low: In the event of heavy rain or wind, lower your profile and try to keep your boat as steady as possible. This can help with stability.

After the Storm

Once the storm has passed, be sure to check the weather again before continuing your journey. Ensure your boat is in good condition and be aware of any new hazards like floating debris or submerged objects.

At Sunset Marina, we want every boating experience on Dale Hollow Lake to be as enjoyable and safe as possible. By being prepared and staying informed, you can handle unexpected storms confidently. Remember to check the weather forecast, have the proper safety equipment, and know your emergency procedures before you set out on the water.
